WordPress Theme: Motion!
Motion is a simple, dark WP theme meant for personal blogging. It’s colorful, widget-ready, with lots of transparency features. It works out of the box with no mandatory configuration.
You can try it out live right here and download it here at the official repository (version 1.0.3).
WordPress.com users – please note:
Motion was recently (Feb. 2010) made available for users of WordPress.com. While I’m very happy about this, please note that I don’t have full control over this version of the theme and the way it is updated and maintained. If you have requests and feedback about that particular version, or questions on how to edit your site under the WordPress.com options, it might be a good idea to use the WordPress.com support forums.
View the attached readme file for a changelog of updated versions.
Features include:
- Ready for WP 2.8.6+ (backwards compatible to some point…)
- 5 widget-ready areas
- Threaded comments (WP 2.7+)
- Drop-down categories menu
- Gravatars enabled in comments
- Valid xhtml and css (some css only valid as css 3)
- Tested on Firefox 2+, Safari 3+, Opera 9+, Chrome 2+ and IE8, IE7 and IE6 (some transparency features disabled)
- Tested and ready for the wp-pagenavi plugin for better navigation
Frequently asked questions:
-
How do I change the sidebar and footer modules?
You can do so using widgets. Go under the Appearance tab in the WP admin panel and locate the Widgets link under it.
-
How do I display a page full-width? And with sidebar?
By default, pages on this theme display without the sidebar. Pages in this theme cover the full-width of the site by default. You can however enable the sidebar very easily by choosing the appropriate page template from the screen in which you edit your pages. In WP 2.8.6, simply go to the right of the screen and find the Attributes tab. Under it, find the Template menu and click on the drop-down to see the page templates available. Choose the one called Page with Sidebar.
-
Can I modify this theme?
You are certainly welcome to modify this theme to your taste! Don’t hesitate to get in touch to show me the result!
-
Do you have this theme in other color schemes?
Not yet. However, if you have a dark background image you like, it is easy for you to change that and it will change the look of the site completely with little effort. Simply override the bodybg.jpg image included in the theme.

Great Theme! I’m using it here http://www.whereisthegooglecar.com
Thanks and keep up the good work (:
Thanks Craig!
hey Sam! i`m using your theme and It`s great! I only have a small problem: I don`t want the “Just another wordpress blog” text to be written on my page. how can I delete it?
Hi!
You can modify this by going under the ‘General’ option, under ‘Settings’ in your admin panel.
Hey, there
Love the template. However, I’m new to php and css and would like to know how to deactivate the drop-down menus that occur in the header when you start to parent pages/categories. I’m self-hosted with GoDaddy.com and have been able to customize the template so far.
Thanks in advance!
Hi Ryan,
you can do this by manually modifying a little parameter in the header.php theme file.
Change this:
wp_list_categories(‘orderby=name&title_li=&depth=2′)
To this:
wp_list_categories(‘orderby=name&title_li=&depth=1′)
Best of luck!
Sam
Hello,
I have been using your theme and it is really nice! I am fairly new to WP and have some tweaks I would like to add to your theme- I know there is a drop-down category feature (I’m not using that and have removed it) but I am wondering if you could help me add the drop-down feature to the navigation? I have been looking everywhere on how to do this and with no luck- everyone suggests plugins and this moves the navigation bar, which I don’t want. I also love how yours looks I just need it to drop-down if there are child pages. I hope you can help, I’ve been searching everywhere
. The site I’m working on is private (while I learn WP) so I can’t leave a link here in the comments. I can send you a link for the test site in an email- just let me know.
Thanks,
Tessa
Sam, I noticed on your Function theme you had an alternate file-download for drop-down pages- “You can download the theme right here.
* If you prefer having the pages as a drop-down, instead of the categories, you can download the modified theme files here.”
I’ve downloaded this file- can I add one of these files in this to my Motion theme folder? What file and where would it go?
Hi Tessa,
unfortunately, copying that file won’t do it. But it’s not a difficult fix to perform. To replace the categories menu with a menu of pages with drop-down, you must replace this:
wp_list_categories(‘orderby=name&title_li=&depth=2′)
with this:
wp_list_pages(‘depth=2&title_li=0&sort_column=menu_order’)
Hope this helps,
S
Thanks Sam,
So now I’m wondering if I can put this code in the top menu part so the topmenu has the dropdown for the pages?
I actually deleted the category menu bar in the template. When I tried this the navigation was all messed up- is it because I don’t have the suckfish file?
I can try putting the category navigation code back in and change it, but I like the navigation to be at the top where it is-
Thanks again for a great theme and your help
Hi again Sam,
I tried putting the category navigation bar back in and changed the code you suggested- it came back with an error and wouldn’t even display the page- next I tried replacing just the word categories with pages instead of the whole line-
i.e
wp_list_pages(‘orderby=name&title_li=&depth=2′)
this worked!
Now I wanted to put the catnav in the topmenu location so I copied the code to the catnav and pasted it where the topmenu code was- it worked!
Whew! Can’t believe I did it! Thanks so much for your help
The theme is awesome! Thanks a lot!
I am thrilled with my new theme. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!!
Hi,
Congrats on the theme, it’s pretty cool. I’ve noticed it looks a bit odd in IE6, but then IE6 use currently is just below 10% (according to http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp )
Thanks for the comment. Yes, a few features have been left out in IE6 due to the heavy use of transparency, but it does work, overall. The world will be a much nicer place once IE6 is totally gone.
Hey there thank you so kindly for providing Motion as a theme -it’s the best I’ve used to date.
I was hoping I could pick your brain about how you created the 50% transparent pngs? I spent a good portion of yesterday googling it but all i could find were articles on standard png transparencies which Im already familiar with.
I’m actually really good with photoshop so an indepth explanation isn’t really needed. Ive tried every combination I could think of exporting, creating alpha masks, selecting transparency colors in the save for web dialog but have had no luck.
Hoping you can help
kris
Hi Kris,
thanks for the comment. The PNG actually just comes from a shape with 50% opacity, cropped to 1×1px. I save it as a 24-bit PNG for true transparency.
Hope this helps!

Hi Sam,
Prefer another menu configuration based on Superfish, but try as I might, I can’t make it work with this theme! Any suggestions for what may be causing the conflict, or how to hunt down the bug myself?
Thanks again for your generosity in sharing these themes with the world!
Brian
Hi Brian,
there is no problem with this theme vs superfish. The most recent of my themes, ‘Function’ (http://85ideas.com/public-releases/new-wp-theme-function/) uses superfish and is similar to ‘Motion’ in many ways. Perhaps you can have a look at it to see how it was adapted there?
S
Sam,
Thanks for the tip. It could very easily be my ham-fisted hacking of your theme.
Best regards,
Brian
Sam!
Got the menu to work by deleting all the files (and resulting spaces) for the menu you had oem.
Now my problem is that all of the header content except my logo drops 2x the top margin in IE!! (I looked in IE7, fwiw.)
I have tried `clear` and everything else I know. Did I delete a conditional argument you included? I can’t find one, but I have already established my incompetence at great length, so you can’t go by me.
I’m asking the horde over at WP, but they are sort of stymied as well.
Appreciate any insights, as always. Still happy with the theme, just wish MS followed conventions! Still don’t see how this is a feature.
Best regards,
Brian
Hi Brian,
there is a stylesheet in the theme to deal specifically with IE7 (and one for IE6 as well). This double-margin bug in IE can usually be fixed by changing the ‘display’ css attribute. I.e., for your particular selector, try adding the following attribute in the stylesheet:
display:inline;
You can also try simply manually modifying the margin in the IE7 specific stylesheet. Or change it from margin to padding; strangely that works sometimes.
Hope this helps!
Sam
Thanx a lot Sam. Will try it out later in the day.
I want to show pages on Top Menu and “Categories” in sidebar. Is there option to remove “Category” navigation from Top Menus?
To do this, you must manually modify the header.php theme file.
Hi Sam!
Yep, fixed the favicon by changing contents of genericlogo.png. Wierd!
Next issue I have (really not many. This is a great theme!) is how/where do I change text in the header banner widget? It doesn’t show up on my widget page. I have done some slicing -n- dicing with this, and may have lost a tag or something. Any help would be most, well, helpful!
Brian
Sam,
Never mind! ID 10 T problem!
Brian
Ok, cool
Hey, I want to know how to use FTP Filezila. Is it something chargeable? Or are there any possibilities that I can use it for free. It is asking for some username and password, but since I am only using .wordpress.com version, I have the wordpress username and pasword(is that the same?). I want to use my own themes, not the one given by wordpress. Is that possible? thnx
Hi,
1- Filezila should not be working with those same credentials, no. I would suggest you refer to the instructions from the author of this application for more.
2- I don’t believe WordPress.com allows you to add your own themes right now.
Best,
Sam
Hi,
Thanks for this b’ful theme. I loved it so much that, in addition to using it on wordpress, I also tweaked it a ‘lil bit to use it for my webpage.
I hope making these modifications won’t involve copyright issues. I’ve added proper credits to 85ideas.com in the footer of my webpage
Once again, awesome design !
Hi,
that is completely fine, no worries.
Thanks!
Sam
I like this theme and am using. Can I install a Java Script Widget using wordpress.com admin. I don’t have my blog hosted as of yet. I am looking to use DandyID in the header for all my social network links.
Thanks for your response.
MA
Hi Marc,
I believe WordPress.com restricts the widgets that can be used right now, so I don’t think that will be possible.
Best,
Sam
I really love this theme, it’s well laid out and the imagery is fantastic.
I wanted to let you know that I’m fiddling with some of the colors to make it a bit more my own which is much easier to do than I thought it would.
Cheers and thank you for making such a wonderful theme for us to use.
Thank you, I’m happy you like it!
Love the theme! I have mine hosted and I wanted to know about two options. The pages section at the top that updates as pages are added, is there a way to edit that manually and if so where is it located? second and minor, is it possible to add a comment tracking/posting to the bottom of the post without having to hit read more. Thanks again for the great theme and keep up the good work!
Hi Ryan,
yes, it is possible to manually edit the pages shown in the menu. To do this, you must edit the ‘topmenu’ selector in the header.php theme file.
Adding a counter for the comments is easy to do, but requires manually modifying the theme files as well (sorry if I don’t have time to go into details).
Best,
Sam
Hi Sam! Thanks for the awesome theme. I’m trying to figure out how to show the number of comments on each post on the main page–either at the top or bottom of the post would do nicely. I tried simply altering the “read more” link, but no dice–I am weak in the ways of html!
Whoops, nevermind! I found it, thanks! You can delete my question if you like.
Jax,
How did you find it because I want to be able to do the same thing with the comments? If you could email me and let me know I’d really appreciate it.
HI!
Why can I not set a favicon???
Brian
Hi Brian,
I see your favicon right now. Problem solved I guess?
S
Hello,
great template! But: I can’t activate the drop-down-menu on the top. I’m a beginner.
The structure is “information”-> “mein Kollege kann das auch – ja??” (you can see it below under pages.
CAn I activate the drop-down menu somewhere?
THanks
Felix
Hi Felix,
there is nothing to do to activate the drop-down menu. The way it works is it displays the 1st level categories and queries their children. Hence, once you add posts and create ’sub-categories’, they will show there automatically.
Best,
Sam
I am using wordpress.com and not a blog on my domain. I want to remove the read more option in the posts. Is it possible to remove that using wordpress?
If so, kindly let me know how to do that.
Regards.
Nitin
Hi,
removing these involves modifying the theme files. I don’t believe the WordPress.com version allows that.
Best,
Sam
Hello,
When you say: ” if you have a dark background image you like, it is easy for you to change that and it will change the look of the site completely with little effort. Simply override the bodybg.jpg image included in the theme.”, is it for wordpress.org only or can we change it in worpress.com ? And if so, where do we find the bodybg.jpg to change it ?
Thanks a lot.
Hi Bruno,
thanks for your comment. I don’t believe WordPress.com allows users to modify theme files and images right now, so that statement would apply for users of the self-hosted version of WordPress.
Best,
Sam
Hi Sam,
Really nice and practical design. I´m very happy with it. Is perfect for what a I need and the top menu for categories is fantastic.
The only thing is that I can´t find the way to have words translated to my country language: Latest Entries, File Under, Read more, Older entries, Back to top, Tags, etc… I know that is not a big issue but some people didn´t understand english and if possible I will like to be able to translate it. For the rest the customization options with the widgets to the trick.
If there is an easy way to have this translated please let me know.
And, of course, thank you very much for this great design.
Hi,
I’m happy you like the theme, thank you. I am noticing you are using the WordPress.com version. To my knowledge, that version does not allow the modification of theme files (except the CSS), so I’m afraid translating those manually will not be possible. (Unless WordPress.com offers an option that I don’t know of…)
Best,
Sam
Thank you, Sam. Now I will stop my search. I can live with the Theme as it´s. Is not very important to translate these few words and the Theme is amazing anyway.
Merçi. Gracias.
Great theme. Thanx a lot. It really changed the look of the blog. I’m not very tech savy. Wud like to know how to remove the RSS button at the top right hand corner. I’ve burnt a feedburner feed and don’t want to confuse potential subscribers.
Thanx Again.
Hi,
you can remove that menu item by manually modifying the header.php theme file. Find the selector with a tag called ‘php bloginfo(‘rss2_url’)’ and delete that list item altogether.
Another thing you can do is use the FeedBurner feedsmith plugin: http://www.google.com/support/feedburner/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=78483. That plugin forwards all feeds to your FeedBurner feed.
Best of luck,
Sam
