Is Blogging a Good Career Choice in 2021

Blogging is often praised as a great way to make your money online. A lot of people have made a lot of money blogging with the most successful of them making hundreds of thousands of dollars a month blogging and others selling their well-established blogs for millions of dollars. On the other hand, blogging has been around for a long time and, due to its low barriers to entry, many people have entered the field, and now there are those who argue that the industry is saturated. In light of that, it is only natural to wonder if blogging is a good career choice at this moment in time.

There are two ways you can make money as a professional blogger: you can either work for someone else, as a freelancer or an employee, or you can establish your own blog and build everything from the ground up.

Working for a site or company that is already established is the easier path. You have a clear path to follow with clear instructions on what to do with your time. You also start making money right off the bat. You will either be paid a fixed wage or a given amount per article that you write, especially if you work for the best essay writing service. That means you will be able to make money as a blogger right from the beginning.

When it comes to doing blogging as a business, on the other hand, things aren’t as easy or rosy as they might be made to look in the media.

Blogging as a Business

To start with, many people like to point out that there have been many good bloggers who made it in the industry and ended up rich. Many of those that made it also like to say that, to get lots of traffic to your blog, all you have to do is write really good content.

The truth, however, is that it is not as simple as that. Many of the bloggers that end up getting plenty of traffic are either lucky or really good at marketing, even though it might not be immediately obvious. In fact, an established blog has a greater chance of getting plenty of traffic with low-quality content than a relatively unknown blog has of getting traffic with amazing content.

There is also the question of SEO. A lot of people will tell you that if you target great long-tail keywords, you will carve out a niche for yourself with very little competition and get a following in no time. This has been true for a while. However, with constant changes to Google’s algorithm, this is getting more and more difficult. Also, due to the low barriers to entry, finding a niche with no competition in blogging is akin to finding a unicorn.

Blogging should be a means to an End

To really make money as a blogger, you should start to think of it less as an end in itself and more as a means to an end. Most of the most successful bloggers today do not primarily rely on blogging as a business. Instead, they sell courses or have eCommerce stores or offer some kind of service for which they run a blog. The blog then becomes part of their sales funnel and drives traffic to the rest of their business where they actually convert users into paying customers.

One popular alternative to earn money through blogging is affiliate marketing, especially through the Amazon Associates program. There are also special affiliate marketing themes that will help you gain more conversions from writing articles about products or services.

Which should you go for?

If you want to do nothing but write, then it is a good idea to be a freelancer or employed blogger and make your money through guest posts and being paid directly for articles or being paid a salary in case you have been hired full time. That way, you don’t have to think too much about how you are going to monetize your own blog and make a living out of it.

You can still run your own blog, even as a freelancer. However, it should not be the main source of your income. In fact, the blog should act more like your portfolio, where you showcase your work and potential clients can see your style of writing before they decide whether to hire you or not.

On the other hand, if what you’re looking to do is escape the employed life and want to build a viable business from scratch, then don’t make blogging the main part of that business. Instead, let it be a means to an end. Have something that provides value to your readers, whether a product or service and then use the blog to drive traffic to it. In fact, if your conversion goal is concrete enough, the blog can be a good way to measure and test your marketing efforts, and it can help you serve that conversion goal.

Conclusion

Ultimately, blogging is what you make of it. It has come a long way since its origins in the younger days of the internet, and it doesn’t seem to be going away soon. However, old strategies for making money from blogging are being phased out, and more creative out-of-the-box ideas are needed to thrive in this cutthroat industry.
